A child was killed Saturday in an accident involving a tanker-truck in Buchanan County

Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office deputies were sent to a home in the 1100 block of Fairbank-Amish Boulevard near Fairbank around 9:50 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Office said Sunday that Samuel Helmuth, 1, of Fairbank, ran in front of the truck, operated by Eric Gilliam, 38, of Cedar Rapids.

Gilliam was unable to see the child due to a blind spot caused by the nose of the truck.

Prior to the arrival of sheriff’s deputies, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the incident appears to be accidental and no charges are pending.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Fairbank Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, along with the county medical examiner.
