14-year-old boy, Luke Lamson of Athens, remained in critical condition Tuesday at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo after a farm accident Sunday.
Leroy Township Fire Chief Jim Thompson said Tuesday it appears the young man is improving and should recover. Township firefighters were called to a farm on One-Half Mile Road in Leroy Township about 3 p.m. and said they found the boy under the rear wheels of a semi trailer filled with soybeans. Thompson said Lamson was pinned at his pelvis and leg.
Thompson estimated the weight of the trailer at 20,000 to 30,000 pounds. He said the boy’s injuries would have been even more serious if the ground under him was not soft.
The accident occurred when another family member was using a farm tractor to pull a semi tractor and trailer. Officials are unsure how the boy was struck. The Michigan State Police also were called and the incident remains under investigation.
“It was an accident, a farm accident,” Thompson said.
Thompson said firefighters used power equipment to raise the trailer wheels enough to free the boy, who was conscious throughout.
“It looks encouraging for him,” he added. “We are just wishing the best for the young man.”
