A father driving a farming implement struck and killed his 18-month-old child Wednesday afternoon, MSP said.
Eighteen-month-old Liam Abbott died after he was run over by a small tractor operated by his father, Eric Abbot.
The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. in the area of Lacey Road and M-66 in Barry County.
According to police and published reports, Eric and his wife Sarah were moving a dog house in the back yard of their home in near Nashville, a small village between Battle Creek and Ionia.
The family breeds dogs and have dog houses at various locations on their property just off of M-66 in Assyria Township.
Police say Eric was backing up the tractor when he accidentally ran over the small boy.
Sarah Abbot posted some pictures of her son on her public Facebook timeline. Since then, dozens of people have posted expressions of sympathy beneath the pictures.
Police say their relatives and friends are helping the parents endure their grief.
“The family is obviously very upset,” says Michigan State Police trooper Blaine Bachman. “Fortunately, they have a lot of close family members and a pastor nearby that are providing some support.”
Liam was the younger of the couple’s two small children.
