The family of a 13-year-old Hankinson boy critically injured when he was run over during an Oktoberfest hayride is trying to raise money for his care.
A GoFundMe page posted on behalf of Ethan Peterson said the crash on Saturday is just one of a long series of struggles for his family.
Ethan’s father Mark Peterson died Sept. 17 following a long battle with heart disease, the fundraiser’s page says.
Now it’s back to the hospital for Ethan’s mother, Dawn Peterson, as he remains in critical but stable condition following the unusual crash.
It happened around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, when a tractor pulling two flatbed hay trailers was driving on a Hankinson street when Ethan Peterson was run over by the second trailer.
People had been steadily coming and going from the slow-moving trailers the entire afternoon during the Oktoberfest celebration, but about 25 riders were on the hay trailers at the time, said North Dakota Highway Patrol Sgt. Tom Herzig.
“We’re hoping the best for him,” said Herzig. He could not describe the precise nature of Peterson’s injuries.
Donald Buckhaus, 59, of Hankinson was driving the tractor at about five miles per hour, according to the patrol.
Herzig said the question of whether charges would be brought against Buckhaus would have to wait until the completion of the investigation.
He wasn’t entirely clear on what, if any, charges might be brought, given how unusual the circumstances of the incident were.
“It isn’t a routine traffic crash that we’re dealing with here,” Herzig said.
