Blair girl, 14, killed and five others hurt in Friday crash

BLAIR, Neb. — A Blair teenager was killed and five others were injured in a traffic accident around 10:30 Friday morning.

Heidy Martinez, 14, died in the accident.

Authorties were called to the scene in an area a half mile west of Co Rd 23 on Co Rd 18 and then north on a field road.

Investigators said a Chevy SUV with the six juveniles inside was southbound on a farm field road. There were two males and four females, ages 13 and 14 involved.

A 14-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, entered a corn field on the east side and rolled. Only one occupant was wearing a seatbelt. Martinez was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Of the remaining five occupants, one was transported by medical helicopter from the scene to an Omaha hospital, one was transported by rescue squad to Omaha, three were transported to the Blair Hospital where one was later taken by medical helicopter to Omaha.

The names of the other occupants and driver were not immediately released. The Washington County Sheriff Accident Reconstruction team responded to the accident.

For the third time in less than a week, an all-terrain vehicle crash sent someone to the hospital in Southeast Idaho.

The latest crash happened around 10:40 a.m. Friday on McPherson Canyon Road near Grace in Caribou County.

The Caribou County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 13-year-old boy driving an ATV suffered serious injuries in the crash when he collided with another vehicle.

Maine man dies after falling into manure pit at farm

TURNER, Maine — A 19-year-old Turner man has died after he fell into a manure pit at his family’s farm Monday morning.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department said Roy Varney was cleaning out the cattle barn at Nezinscot Farm with a skid-steer when he got too close to the edge of the manure pit and fell in.

Varney was pulled from the pit and taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

The farm posted on its Facebook page Tuesday afternoon that Varney had died.

Officials said Varney is the son of the farm’s owner.

4-year-old boy run over by tractor

OLIVE TOWNSHIP, MI – A 4-year-old boy was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital after being run over by a tractor Monday evening in Olive Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Police responded to the farming accident at 8:52 p.m. on Monday, July 8, which occurred on the 7500 block of 104th Avenue, according to a news release issued by sheriff’s deputies.

The boy, of Olive Township, was riding on the tractor with a 34-year-old man, who was driving the tractor and farming his land. Deputies said the boy fell off the tractor, and was driven over by the man.

The boy received treatment on scene by AMR EMS, and then was transported by Aero Med to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, the release reads.

Deputies said the boy is in stable condition as of 11 p.m. on Monday.

The incident remains under investigation by sheriff’s deputies.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted on scene by Olive Township Fire Department, AMR EMS Ambulance services and Aero Med.
