A tragic accident Sunday afternoon at an Amish farm north of Diggins has resulted in the death of a 2-year-old boy.
Webster County Coroner Michael Taylor confirmed the child’s death Monday, calling the event “just a sad and heartbreaking accident,” which occurred around 3 p.m. that afternoon at the aforementioned farm on Gentry Road, just north of Diggins.
“The Amish family residing at the home had multiple children playing outside, and the 2-year-old child found his way to a makeshift stock tank used for watering sheep,”
Taylor explained. “The child fell into the tank, and his father found him a short time later.
“There was nothing to do at that point.”
Taylor said the stock tank was near the family home.
He pronounced the child dead at 4:55 p.m. Sunday.
“The family is heartbroken, just devastated,” he said. “My office is investigating this as an accident.”
A mandatory investigation by Taylor’s office is under way, and he noted that deputies from the Webster County Sheriff’s Department also were on the scene Sunday, conducting that department’s investigation.
Taylor added that per state law, the Missouri Division of Family Services (DFS) office in Marshfield was notified, and DFS officials also will conduct its investigation.
“Per state law, there will be a mandatory meeting of the child-death review panel over the next week,” he said. “Again, we’re investigating this as an accident. It’s just a tragedy where a child’s life was lost.”
